Shams Culture Central Park, Abu Dhabi

Location: Abu Dhabi, UAE
Building Area: 40,000 sqm

Client: Sorouh Real Estate Development

Nestled at the heart of the burgeoning Reem Island, Shams Central Park epitomizes a convergence of visionary urban design and architectural excellence. Spearheaded by ZNA, serving as both urban designer and architectural maestro, the project encompasses a sprawling 40,000 square meters, housing an array of civic marvels including the Cultural Building / Discovery Garden, Local Arena, Food/Restaurant Complex, and Entertainment Complex. Against the backdrop of urban development, Shams Central Park offers a unique haven where fundamental, cultural, entertainment, leisure, and spiritual needs find expression within a predominantly natural setting, deliberately juxtaposing the surrounding urban fabric.

The Cultural Exhibition Hall stands as a beacon of family-centric entertainment and education, boasting dualistic external facades. Its roof seamlessly extends to meld with the park canopy, infusing the elevated space with vibrancy while facilitating ample light and air flow into the exhibition halls below. Partially submerged underground, the hall ingeniously utilizes the earth's surface as a roof component, not only reducing cooling expenses but also championing sustainable design principles. Drawing architectural inspiration from the retail complex's northern facade, the east facade incorporates prism skylights to enhance aesthetics and optimize natural lighting, resulting in an intriguing fusion with the retail complex, exemplifying a collision of architectural philosophies.

The Sports Arena serves as a hub of leisure and entertainment, hosting a diverse array of events ranging from cinematic screenings to live concerts and public gatherings. Marrying classical circular theater motifs with contemporary design elements, the architectural form features a semi-transparent roof and radial beam structure, maximizing light penetration into the venue space while imbuing it with historical resonance. Accessible via the arcade on the east side, visitors are greeted with panoramic vistas of the venue's canopy, the adjacent lakeshore, and the distant silhouette of the cultural exhibition hall, offering an immersive experience within this dynamic architectural landscape.
